Cassowary Credits – Wet Tropics Rainforest Recovery Program
The rainforests of the Wet Tropics region of Queensland have faced significant fragmentation due to agricultural expansion, residential development, and infrastructure projects. This degradation is further compounded by the introduction of invasive species, diseases, and the impacts of surrounding land uses. Protecting and restoring these vital rainforests not only preserves terrestrial biodiversity but also enhances the health of freshwater and marine ecosystems, including the Great Barrier Reef.
Developed by Terrain NRM, Cassowary Credits offer a market-based solution aligned with Australia’s commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework, to which it is a signatory. By enabling investors to financially reward landholders in the Wet Tropics region, the program supports validated and verified habitat restoration and preservation efforts. Covering an area of approximately two million hectares, this initiative is designed to deliver long-term environmental benefits, contributing to the global goals of halting biodiversity loss and restoring ecosystems by 2030.
Each Cassowary Credit represents a measurable and independently verified improvement in rainforest condition, as defined by the approved project methodology. The Cassowary Credit Standard and the associated Rainforest Replanting Methodology, , are currently under assessment by Eco-Markets Australia. We are conducting a public consultation to gather feedback on these documents.
Public consultation plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the markets Eco-Markets Australia administers. By gathering feedback from stakeholders, experts, and the broader community, we ensure that the methodologies and standards are not only scientifically robust but also aligned with the realities of environmental restoration efforts. This consultation is a key part of our structured and transparent evaluative framework, which includes technical assessments, independent peer reviews, and broader stakeholder engagement.
The Standard and its supporting documentation outline the rules and requirements for undertaking Cassowary Credit projects. The methodology details the science-based approach to implementing project activities in order to achieve and quantify the environmental benefits that can be converted into Cassowary Credits.
Public Consultation on the draft Standard and draft Rainforest Replanting Methodology is currently open until 30 October 2024. To participate in the public consultation, visit our Consultations page to download the Standard, Methodology and supporting documents, and to find instructions on how to submit your feedback.
