The story

What is happening here

The Wawu Dimbi Julaymba (Daintree River) Rainforest Planting Project is located within the boundary of the Wet Tropics and aims to generate Cassowary Credits under the Rainforest Replanting Methodology through replanting a 2.2ha area of cleared and unused land along the Daintree River. The project will restore lowland tropical rainforest on the site, a highly biodiverse and endangered ecosystem. This Project has been approved to stacked with Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU); more information can be found here Projects | Clean Energy Regulator .

Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation will run the project, with on-ground works being undertaken by Jabalbina’s Forester Team, all Traditional Owners. The project aims to restore the site’s high cultural significance to its Eastern Kuku Yalanji (Julaywarra clan) Traditional Owners and its habitat value for southern cassowaries and other species. project is part of the wider aspiration to restore the riparian corridor along the Daintree River from its coastal wetlands to the mountains.

Apart from its carbon and biodiversity benefits, the project will result in additional benefits, including:

  • Indigenous Engagement and Involvement – the project will be owned and managed by Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners, providing employment and building experience and skills in Jabalbina’s Forester Team.
  • Integrated Economic and Cultural Benefits – Jabalbina is a registered charitable institution, with all income generated being used for the benefit of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji People. Jabalbina runs a range of land and sea management, youth justice, Elders and cultural programs for the benefit of Eastern Kuku Yalanji people and country and seeks to diversify its income away from its current reliance on government funding.
  • Capacity Building for Future Restoration Work – This project is an important learning and capacity-building step for Jabalbina, being the first time Jabalbina has managed an environmental market project. Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners have significant aspirations to restore cleared areas of country, and Jabalbina hopes to undertake future restoration projects resourced through environmental markets to meet these aspirations.
