The Story
What is happening here
The project is in Innisfail on Mamu Country, within the Wet Tropics and aims to generate Cassowary Credits under the ENVOMARK Rainforest Replanting Method, and the Clean Energy Regulator’s Environmental Plantings Method as an approved stacked project (Projects | Clean Energy Regulator)
This dual-credit initiative will be implemented through the following rainforest biodiversity benefit activities:
- Native rainforest replanting and regeneration on degraded land at Ninds Creek.
- Engagement of Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples (Mamu) as contractors and knowledge holders.
- Education and demonstration activities with local schools and landholders.
Additional information:
- Endangered species such as the Southern Cassowary are known to inhabit the area. The site is also historically associated with the rare orchid Dendrobium mirbelianum, not recorded in the wild for over 20 years.
- Project partners include Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC), Terrain NRM, Mamu Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, and Innisfail State College.
- This is the first stacked biodiversity and carbon credit project in the region. It is located adjacent to Moresby Range National Park and will serve as a practical demonstration site for landholders.
- Expected outcomes include 100 years of rainforest regeneration, strengthened native species and ecosystems, employment of Rainforest Aboriginal contractors, student engagement, and long-term land restoration.
- Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples are actively involved through the Mamu Traditional Owners, who are engaged in project delivery and cultural stewardship.
This is the first stacked biodiversity and carbon credit project in Australia. It is located adjacent to Moresby Range National Park and will serve as a practical demonstration site for landholders.

Who’s involved
Cassowary Coast Regional Council
Cassowary Coast Regional Council is a local government organisation in Far North Queensland, located between the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
Council established the region’s first carbon credit project and the first Cassowary Credits project ever registered and planted. Delivering rainforest reforestation on Mamu Country in partnership with the Mamu People and students from Innisfail State College, Council is restoring degraded land and strengthening habitat for native species.
The project serves as a real-world demonstration for landholders, government agencies and organisations seeking to explore a similar pathway in reforestation and environmental markets.
