Pioneer Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project #1

Mackay Whitsunday

The story

What is happening here

The Springvale Fertiliser Efficiency Program is located within the boundary of the Mackay-Whitsunday-Pioneer Great Barrier Reef Catchment and aims to generate Reef Credits under the Nitrogen Use Efficiency Method Through Managed Fertiliser Application (Version 1.1). The Project delivers pollutant‑reduction outcomes across participating sugarcane farms through three integrated practice changes:

  • Action 1: Partial substitution of conventional urea with the Mackay Blend algae‑based biostimulant system to reduce synthetic nitrogen inputs.
  • Action 2: Improved nitrogen‑use efficiency driven by enhanced microbial nitrogen retention, reduced volatilisation, and lower leaching losses.
  • Action 3: Adoption of soil health and carbon building practices that increase nitrogen immobilisation and reduce dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) losses to waterways.

Collectively, these actions are expected to support Reef 2050 WQIP targets and are preliminarily assessed to deliver DIN reductions with outcomes verified under the approved Reef Credit Methodology.
