The story
What is happening here
The Bowen Gully Rehabilitation Project #1 implements landscape rehabilitation measures with the intent to reduce the amount of sediment loss from gully erosion and thereby reduce the amount of fine sediment entering the Great Barrier Reef.
The Bowen GR #1 rehabilitation site is characterised by a single distinct linear-alluvial gully system with significant erosion issues. Historical analysis shows that the gully had been growing since approximately 1940, with substantial soil loss due to head-cut advance, down-wearing and secondary incision.
Over the 25 year crediting period of the Bowen GR #1 Project scenario estimates reduction of approximately 800-4000 Reef Credits per year (Medium sized project).
Remediation works comprise:
• Engineered rock-chute head control structures.
• Engineered grade control structures.
• Gully catchment drainage diversion structures through overland bund flows.
• Soil amelioration within the gully and catchment.
• Revegetation of treated gully through seed.
• Grazing management (exclusion) in treated gully and management in gully catchment.
