Herbert Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project #2

The Herbert Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project #2 is located on a sugarcane farming enterprise within the Herbert River Catchment, which drains to the Great Barrier Reef. This Reef Credit Project has been developed in a partnership between GreenCollar and the land manager. The Project generates Reef Credits under the Method for Accounting Reduction in Nutrient Runoff through Managed Fertiliser Application Version 1.1. through (but not limited to) the following project activities: – Efficient nitrogen fertiliser application – Maintenance of green cane trash blanket, including as fallow cover after final ratoon. – All machines and implements including harvesters and haul outs will operate on the same wheel spacings and under GPS guidance. – Maintain row widths at 1.8-2.0m – At least 60% of the block un-trafficked by machinery. – Intention to plant all sugarcane fallow land to legumes or alternate crops. – Zonal tillage only, with no more than 60% of the area cultivated for cane. – Furrow irrigation – Irrigation application aims to replace known or modelled soil water deficit – No irrigation tailwater will leave the farm – Captured tailwater is rapidly reused on farm.
