What a Reef Credit is

Better water quality for the Reef

Reef Credits represent verified reductions in pollutants entering the Great Barrier Reef catchment. Generated through land management activities that improve water quality, each Credit quantifies a measured reduction in nutrient, pesticide or sediment, creating a tradeable environmental outcome that buyers can invest in.

How it works

From land to credit

A registered project applies an approved methodology on a parcel of land. The outcome is verified, and the credit is issued into the Credit Registry.

The standard behind it

The Reef Credit Standard, and now ACWIS

Reef Credits are issued under the Reef Credit Standard and, increasingly, under ACWIS, Eco-Markets Australia’s broader water quality framework. The two sit alongside each other as methodologies move across. Eligible projects in the Great Barrier Reef catchment continue to generate Reef Credits either way.
